The Sungum premises at 37 Derby Street was historically and conventionally seen as the Sungum's Head Quarters and operated as such from its inception. The congregation at Derby Street was always seen as the Head Quarters congregation and was headed by the Spiritual Head of the Sungum.
The new constitution implemented in 1994 gave the Derby Street congregation a Branch status, thus emerged the Durban Branch under the leadership of a resident Guru. This transition occurred during the leadership of the late His Holiness Sri Swami Arjunananda as the Spiritual Head. The late Guru Ravenananda then became the first resident Guru of the Durban Branch and carried out his roles and responsibilities for the next six years. The Durban Branch elected its own officials and Branch Management Committee and operated separately from Head Quarters.
